I traveled to Kenya in April 2018 to view Spectacular landscapes, experience African culture and witness nature at it's finest in 3 of Kenya's prolific regions. My journey would start in Nairobi, from there I would travel to Amboseli then on to Lake Nakuru then through the Great Rift Valley and on to the Masai Mara. Each region had, it's own unique beauty and an abundance of wildlife.
I arrived in Nairobi in the evening after a 17 hour connecting flight that started from Toronto to Zurich then onward to Nairobi. Our group was welcomed by our safari guides from Classic Journeys and we gathered our luggage and loaded into our vehicles to get to our hotel.
Our guide shared interesting facts about Nairobi and it's people while expertly navigating the congested city streets to finally deliver us to the Savora Stanley Hotel. The Stanley, built in the early 1900's, has been a been the starting point to many famous travelers through out it's history. We enjoyed a brief tour of the hotel the following morning and learned about it's many esteemed guests, Hemingway, Winston Churchill and Queen Elizabeth to name a few.
After our breakfast and orientation, we ventured out into Nairobi to see some of it's local charms. Our first stop was to the AFEW Giraffe Center, home of the Rothschild's giraffe, and location of the world famous Giraffe Manor. We were unable to see Giraffe Manor since it is only accessible to guests booked in the hotel, but we did spend some time at the observation platform feeding and photographing the giraffes. These animals are bred and reintroduced into the wild so it is well worth the visit to contribute to their conservation. You may even get your picture taken kissing a giraffe!
We then moved on to our next stop, the Daphne Sheldrick Elephant Orphanage. We learned upon our arrival that Daphane had passed away the evening before and there was great sadness amongst the keepers. As we walked down to the feeding area to see the young Ellies come for their milk, I was able to see Young Kiasa's stall and her profile displayed on the door. I fostered Kiasa and prearranged with the orphanage to come and see her later in the evening. For now I would travel with all the other guests to witness afternoon feeding and learn a little more about the young orphans and the program that is so vital to their survival. Elephants have very strong family bonds and it is very important that the keepers are willing to commit up to 10 years to be with them and share their lives. Kiasa, being only an infant, had her keeper sleeping right in her quarters to ensure she was fed and cared for throughout the night. When I returned to visit later that evening he shared stories of his experience caring for her. This is a very worthwhile experience and I highly recommend fostering arranging the evening visit before you make your journey to Kenya.
The next morning we met with our guides and loaded up to start our Safari. Our first stop was Amboseli National Park, located near the boarder of Kenya and Tanzania. This park is famous for it's iconic elephants and spectacular views of Mount Kilimanjaro. In April the mountain peak can be covered in clouds for most of the day so we were unable to see the peak when we arrived but the next morning we were very lucky to get a clear picture of the mountain with an elephant in the foreground. We spotted both large and small game and enjoyed watching herds of elephants grazing on lush grass. We spent the evening at Ol Tukai Lodge with a beautiful morning view of Kilimanjaro and the wide open plain with elephants and buffalo grazing near by.
Spending 2 nights in Amboseli gave us time to see ample game and visit a Masai village. We participated in the native dance and were invited inside the village to see their way of life and barter for their bead-work. This is a very interesting experience and a great insight to the Masai way of life.
Leaving Amboseli, we trace our steps back through Nairobi and on to the Great Rift Valley. We stop at a souvenir shop along the way for a picnic lunch and enjoy a spectacular view of the valley before we descend into it's depth. We take a quick jaunt over to Lake Navasha for a boat and walking safari on a small island within the lake. The hippos watch us as boats putt along the shoreline over to the island where many grazing species of animals reside. This area is frequently used as a movie set and the animals are unconcerned with our presence. Our stay is short because we must be at our lodge before sunset in Lake Nakuru.
